REPEATERS

The GPO used repeaters, which were effectively amplifiers, on long routes.  Generally these were in a building called a Repeater Station, which could also be part of a main exchange or a small hut alongside a main trunk road.  They were also used in submarine cables.

Small repeaters, which could be installed in joint boxes, were developed in the 1960's due to components miniaturisation.  These repeaters were installed in a cast iron box with a sealed lid.  They were also pressurised to prevent water ingress and were pumped up with a foot pump.
