These were post payment coin
boxes used in
C.B.S. and
Magneto exchange areas and would also be used on PBX
extensions in any exchange area. Two variants were available, one for
Public Call Offices and the other for Subscriber installations. They all
used a
Mechanism No. 16.

Coins are inserted at the request of the operator as there is
no reject chute.

Fitted in public call offices and subscribers' coin-box installations. The public call box version has a larger and more secure
cash compartment. Locks and Bellsets were ordered separately. Used
with an external Bellset, which was fitted to the backboard. The Mechanism
No. 16B connects to a 12 way terminal block (fitted on the rear of the coin box
case) by means of a 12" piece of IRV PVC 3 wire cable.
A Telephone No. 190 and Bellset No. 29 would normally be
associated with this BCC.

Box, Coin Collecting, No. 16A
Fitted at subscribers' coin-box installations.
Used with an external Bellset, which was fitted to the backboard. The
Mechanism No. 16B connects to a 12 way terminal block (fitted on the rear of
the coin box case) by means of a 12" piece of IRV PVC 3 wire cable.
The casing was made of steel and painted in black enamel.
The case dimensions are 215mm wide x 145mm deep x 288mm high.
A Telephone No. 190 and Bellset No. 29 would normally be
associated with this BCC.

Box, Coin Collecting, No. 16B
These were fitted at public call offices and comprises Container, No. 8A, Front, No. 2 and Mechanism, No. 16. As this mechanism occupies less space in the Container No. 8A than Mechanism No. 14, a
Chute, No. 1 is provided. This is an enclosed channel, forming an
extension to the money funnel, through which coins are directed, via the money funnel,
into the cash compartment. An Adapter, No. 1 is also provided in order to
close the 'B' button aperture (not required) in the side of the Container No. 8A and to
act as the lower hinge support for Mechanism No. 16. Used with a Bellset
No. 34, which was fitted inside the case. The Mechanism is wired to
the Bellset with a 12" piece of IRV PVC 3 wire cable.

Box, Coin Collecting, No. 16C
This type was fitted on subscribers' coin-box installations. The container is
a Container, No. 10A, designed to take the cash drawer Tray, No. 1. The chute extension, adapter and mechanism provided are as described for Box, Coin, Collecting, No.
16B, complete. Used with a Bellset No. 34, which was fitted
inside the case. The Mechanism is wired to the Bellset with a 12" piece of
IRV PVC 3 wire cable.

All the boxes are provided with a plain black
front (Front, No. 6) containing a reject coin cup. They are all fitted with
a Mechanism No. 16.
On the No 16 and 16A a Bellset was fitted on the back
board, but this changed with the No. 16B and 16C, when a Bellset No. 34 (Magneto &
C.B.S. 1, 2 or 3) would be fitted inside the coin box and a
Telephone No. 196 would be fitted above the coin box.
There are no A or B buttons associated with the Mechanism
No. 16,
as the call is under complete control of the operator who instructs the user
when to put the coins in.
Label No. 306
The Label No. 306 (pictured below) is an enamelled instruction
plate that fits on the top of the box, held in place by the denomination plate.
The picture is of an Irish coin box as they used 1p, 2p and 5p. Drawing -
90148.

Denomination Plate
The original denomination plate was produced in Brass and Chromium plated
with a Matt finish (1d, 6d and 1s).

For decimalised boxes the denomination plate was made of plastic and
called a Kit No. 174A (2p and 10P) or from 1970 onwards a Kit No. 174B (5p
and 10P).
