TELEPHONE No. 76

Pedestal Telephone

Candlestick table telephone used on S.T. & C's (late Western Electric Co.) Rotary Exchanges at Darlington (October 1914) and Dudley (September 1916).

Darlington exchange had an initial capacity of 800 lines but could provide for a total capacity of of 2,800 lines.

The components could not be fitted within the case of the telephone so a Bellset No. 1 with bias spring would be installed.

Mark 234 - Western Electric Co. - Used on Darlington Exchange (used Dial No. 5).

Mark 235 - Western Electric Co. - Used on Dudley Exchange (used Dial No. 6) - see picture to the right.

Some of the information here was taken from Diagram N176, the original dated 1918 and the issue 2, dated 1919.  The Issue 2 diagram shows the Mk235 set with a Dial No. 6.  The GPO Stores Rate Book 1928 confirms the above but also introduces the Dial, Automatic No. 8FW in place of the Dial, Automatic No. 6.  A Dial, Auto No. 10FW may also be found on these telephones.

These telephones could also be used for party line working.

The equivalent wall set is the Telephone No. 65.

Superseded by the Telephone No. 150W in 1928.
