Excavator, Trench, No. 3 (Campbell & Isherwood)

Application
For excavating trenches 4in. and 10in. in width to a depth of 3ft. Suitable for use on steeply sloping verges if one track is blocked up. Care should be exercised on asphalt surfaces to prevent damage by tracks, especially in warm weather.

General description
The excavator is of the Chain type self-propelled and mounted on caterpillar tracks. The operator stands on a platform at the rear of the machine and steers with a long vertical lever that actuates steering clutch mechanism on the tracks. Power is provided by a 121h.p. air-cooled petrol or diesel engine with electric start. A gearbox and planetary reduction unit gives 3 forward and 1 reverse speed for transport and digging. The excavator has road speeds of up to 3 m.p.h. The digging boom is raised and lowered hydraulically. Soil from the trench is deposited to one side of the machine only by means of an auger.

Performance
The excavated soil is finely chopped and ideal for reinstatement. Digging speed varies considerably depending on soil conditions and dimensions of trench. Typical performance figures are:-
(a) 10 in. width - 24in. depth.
Good digging conditions 60 yards/hour.
Difficult digging conditions 30 yards/hour.
(b) 4in. width - 12in. depth.
Good digging conditions 120 yards/hour
Difficult digging conditions 60 yards/hour.

Dimensions
Length with boom up 110in. and Width 48in.

Weight
1ton 2cwt.
