TELEPRINTER, AUTOMATIC-TRANSMITTER or
TRANSMITTER, AUTOMATIC

The Teleprinter automatic transmitter is a telegr4ph machine designed to transmit 5-unit code signals in accordance with perforations in a paper tape which has been prepared by a perforator. The machine consists basically of an a. c. or d. c. motor driving a transmitting head through a pawl and ratchet type clutch which is under the control of a tape-control unit. The transmitting head contains a paper feed mechanism and a set of cams which control the generation of the start and stagy signals and the sensing arrangements which convert the conditions on the tape to electrical signals.

The tape-control unit is positioned between the motor and the transmitting head.

It appears that they were originally called "Teleprinter, Automatic-Transmitter" and were later renamed as the "Transmitter, Automatic".
